Both lithium silicate and sodium silicate are commonly used in concrete treatment, but they have different performance characteristics.
Water glass is the common industrial name for sodium silicate. It is an inorganic chemical compound composed of sodium oxide and silicon dioxide. Depending on the formulation, water glass can appear as a transparent liquid, white powder, or solid glass-like lump.
Sodium silicate is widely used across many industries because of its strong bonding ability, alkaline properties, and chemical stability. In construction, it is often used as a concrete densifier and waterproofing agent. When applied to concrete surfaces, sodium silicate reacts with calcium compounds to form a hard and durable structure.
In the detergent industry, sodium silicate functions as a builder and corrosion inhibitor. It improves cleaning performance and protects washing machines from metal corrosion. The compound is also used in ceramic production, foundry molds, adhesives, and fire-resistant coatings.
Because sodium silicate is non-flammable and relatively environmentally friendly compared with many organic chemicals, it remains an important raw material in modern industrial manufacturing.
