Sodium silicate is typically produced through a high-temperature fusion process involving silica sand and sodium carbonate. These raw materials are heated in a furnace at temperatures above 1,200°C.
During the reaction, silica combines with sodium oxide to form molten sodium silicate. The molten material is then cooled to produce solid glass-like lumps. These solids can later be dissolved in water to produce sodium silicate liquid.
Manufacturers can adjust the ratio of silica to sodium oxide to create different grades of sodium silicate. These variations determine the chemical properties and industrial applications of the final product.
Because sodium silicate production relies on relatively abundant raw materials, it remains one of the most cost-effective inorganic chemicals used worldwide.
